Self-consciousness

In Taiwan, parents mostly wish their children better than others especially for their grades. I just came across a chance to tutor a junior boy in English nearby. This boy was quite excellent in math and physics, while his Chinese and English slightly fall by the grades which are not as good as the excellence of math and physics. But anyway, he was really an excellent boy in class. The only bad thing, as his parents considered, was that he often made careless mistakes on English exams. His parents were keen to find a tutor accompanying him with studying. Or I should made more clear that their parents desire to find someone in haste who wishes to "accompany" him during the time before the official exam. It was my pleasure to teach English for him, but I cannot load him with burden for carrying the responsibility of study. Maybe I was wrong to correct their thoughts for not accompanying students with their study. I told the junior boy to stay more focus on what question he was answering on the sheet because it was not something I could help him along the way. He must confront his problems for not making mistakes so often. This has nothing to do with the teaching of merely listening to the lecture for boosting the English ability. Rather, it has something to do with the self-consciousness whether one is deeply aware of the mistakes he should not made time and again. Cruel as I, he should face the real problem of himself since it was not the responsibility I ought to take but only himself. Meanwhile, I really hate myself saying these words.

But there are something I notice on this boy. It is that he has the spirit of doing research. It is often said that people make mistakes on the exam because they offer the wrong answer. Such assumption might not be totally right since we often regard the exam as a standard, which everything in the exam tend to be the qualification for judging one in his or her level. That small piece of mistake will not necessarily be wrong but the special part in exploration for research stuff. The research stuff has no fixed answer or certain truth permanently but can be delved into through different kinds of angles and perspectives.
